What is Wireless Internet?

Wireless Internet provides high-speed access to the Internet without the use of a phone line. Much like a radio signal, data is transmitted to and from a computer via antennas. The data travels from the computer, through Ethernet cable to an antenna mounted outside a residence or business, and then proceeds to the base antenna via micro-wave type transmission.

How fast is Wi-Power Wireless Internet?

For residential customers, download speeds start at 384Kbps. Download speeds for business customers start at 1Mbps. Higher bandwidth options are available, please call for details.

Is Wireless Internet secure?

The transmission of data over the wireless Internet spectrum is secure. The spectrum has been used in the past for military communications because it is difficult to detect or interfere with. However, as with any broadband internet connection, the customer has a constant open connection to the internet and is, therefore, subject to any and all forms of internet attack. TWN does not provide any inherent network security and each customer is responsible for protecting their individual systems. Software firewall protection is widely available at most retail computer stores and is highly recommended. There are frequent software or firmware updates of virus protection and/or firewall systems and it is important that customers be aware of them and performs updates as needed.

Do I have to dial up to my ISP?

No. Wireless Internet is an “always on” technology. There is no phone line involved. There is no wait for a modem to dial up; just open a browser and begin to access the Internet. Customers with high speed service will also have free access to the dial-up system as a back-up mechanism where available.

Customer must have a computer equipped with a network port, which is standard on many computers.
